Summer Intensive

Welcome to Summer Stage 2020!

Our Summer Stage program has undergone a full makeover. We are so excited to share the changes that are coming!

Summer Stage is the ultimate summer musical theater intensive. Riverdale Rising Stars began Summer Stage with the aim of creating the “whole artist” in a fun, innovative and professional environment. Summer Stage gives the opportunity for young artists to explore the world of theatre everyday.

Summer Stage Workshops 2011New and Improved: Summer Stage Performing Arts Intensive

This summer we will be redirecting the goals of Summer Stage from those of a camp to those of a musical theatre training intensive. For that reas
on, we are renaming our program Summer Stage Performing Arts Intensive. Along with this shift in focus comes a number of other changes.

Tracked Classes vs. Age Groups

In the past, classes have been grouped by age. All 4th graders would have dance together, 5th graders would have acting together, etc. While this model offered certain positives, we have decided that tracking classes by skill level rather than by age will create an environment where students’ individual skills will be able to be adequately challenged and nurtured, providing the most rewarding results. In order to determine class level, the first two days of our intensive will be dedicated to auditions, both for our mainstage musical as well as for classes. On day three, each student will receive their own personal schedule with the class placements that we believe will most benefit them.

New Classes and Elective
With our new focus on rigorous training, we will be shifting a number of our classes. Students will now participate in jazz and ballet classes as required studio dance classes, seeing as these are the two main styles of dance that influence musical theatre choreography. In these classes, students will learn technique as well as choreography. Other dance classes (tap, hip-hop, modern etc) will be offered as electives. Additionally, students will no longer be required to swim every day. Instead, swim will be offered as an elective that students can choose to opt into.

Master Class Fridays

This summer we will be bringing back the Master Class Fridays that Summer Stage offered in the past. These can include audition workshops, Broadway guests, stage combat training, Shakespeare and more.

We are thrilled to bring these changes to Summer Stage, and cannot wait to provide these young artists with an optimal musical theatre training experience.

Students will present a full scaleSummer Stage 2011 musical!

Main Stage students work with professionals on a daily basis in Acting, Dance (Technique and Choreography), and Voice.

Scene Stealers students will get an introduction to musical theatre performance including singing and dancing.

Stage CRAFT students will spend the summer immersed in all technical aspects of theatre including lighting, sound design, scenic elements, and costume.

Main Stage and Stage CRAFT students will have the chance to opt into elective courses such as Puppetry, Playwriting, Improv, and more. All of our students will spend an entire summer immersed in the arts in a nurturing and encouraging environment.

In addition to daily workshops, students in Summer Stage Performing Arts Intensive also work on a full scale musical (either onstage or in the technical aspects of the production depending on track), attend a Broadway show, and receive master classes from industry professionals. The Summer Stage team includes our own Rising Stars Teens and alumni serving as counselors, with highly skilled teaching artists leading daily performing arts classes and workshops.
