RPAC Classes (Middle School)

A 12 week performing arts program

Classes begin: March 12 / Classes end: June 8 / RPAC break: April 6th – 15th

Acting and Expression – Julian Rozzell Jr
This class will focus on acting technique and the composition of original performance material. Students will participate in theatre games, vocal and breathing exercises, writing and performing monologues, and improvisation exercises leading to the creation of dramatic scenes. Students will also gain perspective on major schools of acting technique, from Stanislavski to Meisner. The class will culminate in a performance to share the students’ work with the community.

Musical Theater* – Gregory Kanter
This class will give singing actors the tools needed to successfully interpret and perform a musical theatre song. Students will take turns performing their material for their classmates followed by coaching from the instructor focusing on analysis of the music, lyrics, and how they fit together. The class will culminate in a recital showcasing the work we have done over the course of the class.

Intro to Stage Combat – David Dean Hastings

Calling all Action Heros! Want to be an action movie star? Ever wonder how they do those fights? Stage Combat is the answer! Learn how to punch and kick like on the big screen! This course will introduce students to the Illusion of Fighting, and understanding how those dynamic action sequences can be achieved safely. We will learn the topics of Partnering, Centering, Distance, Action-Reaction, Making Your Own Soundtrack, The Illusion of Fighting and most important of all, Safety! No previous experience necessary. We provide focus mitts and pads

RRS Choir “Glee” – Lesly de Groot
This combo course focuses on showcasing individual singers within ensemble pieces. Movement, music, and story telling take center stage while recreating highlights from Broadway, jazz and standard ballads. Students begin to incorporate ensemble vocal warm up, ear training, breathing and diction. Excellent performance platform and prerequisite to voice lessons. Potential premiere touring ensemble for Riverdale Rising Stars!

Access the Arts – TBA
Access the Arts consist of classes, workshops and performance opportunities that enable area youth with physical, cognitive or developmental delays to fully participate in theatre arts.
Dedicated to developing participants’ skills in acting, singing, dance (and thereby the related areas of communication skills, speech and gross motor development) Access the Arts features traditional musical theatre courses adapted to meet the needs of all participants, taught by professionally trained teaching artists and special educators.
