2017-2018 Riverdale Y Dance Guidelines and Information

Thank you so much for joining us in our 8th year at Riverdale Y Dance!  We are thrilled to teach and provide a warm and structured environment for your children to experience the joy of dance.

PLEASE MAKE SURE WE HAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.  Email is our primary source of communication in the dance department. Throughout the year, we will be communicating important class information, updates, weather closures, guest teachers, upcoming events, and more! If at any point during the year, you feel you’re not receiving the information being sent, or you’d like to add another e-mail address, contact us at dance@riverdaley.org, and we will add you to our list. If you are new this year to our program, please check your Spam folder in the first month of dance classes to ensure our e-mails aren’t being sent there.

Class Levels: As we begin the year, we want to find the best class and dance style for your child! Directors and teachers reserve the right to move students to different classes based on age, level of technique, and/or developmental needs.

Substitute Teachers: Substitute teachers may teach classes when teachers are absent from class.

Snow Days: If classes are cancelled due to bad weather, your dancer can make up the missed class by attending any of our other classes that are age and level appropriate.  Please check with your teacher or the Director for appropriate make-up classes.   All cancelled snow day classes will be communicated via e-mail.

Recital: The Recital performance this school year will be held on June 17, 2018, time TBA.  Please hold the whole day!  All dancers participating in the recital must also be available the week before for tech and dress rehearsals, so mark your calendars now for 3:30-8 PM those that Monday-Thursday.  Dancers will not need to be there the whole time, and we do our best to get our younger dancers in and out as early as possible. We schedule our older dancers as they finish with school in the afternoon.  All dancers who participate in the same class September thru June are invited to participate in the recital.  Dancers who join for only 2nd semester are invited to participate on a case by case basis.   If dancers choose to participate in the recital, they must adhere to the absence policy for the second semester.  Please mark your calendars for June 11, 12, 13, 14, & 17.  Attendance is mandatory for all rehearsals if your dancer chooses to perform in the recital. The recital performance is a fun, rewarding and exciting time for our dancers, and we hope you’ll join us!

Attendance Policy: Dancers may not be absent more than 3 times total during the 2nd semester.  If a dancer is absent more than 3 times, the teacher and director reserve the right to pull them from the recital on a case by case basis.  This policy has been put in place to support our dancers and teachers who are working hard toward their personal technique and recital performances.  When students miss a number of classes, they may fall behind.  This circumstance is neither fair to that particular dancer nor to his/her peers and teacher.  Please observe and respect our attendance policy.  We aim to provide an environment that strives to challenge our young dancers and help them grow in a supportive and warm environment.

Refund Policy: We do not offer refunds or credits for dance classes.

Recital Costumes: Costumes are non-refundable as each costume is custom made for the dancers.  We will do our best to exchange for sizing purposes.  Students will be responsible for providing their own dance shoes and tights for the recital.  We will send out a complete list of what type of tights and shoes each class requires during the 2nd semester.

Dress Code: Ballet students ages 6 and under can wear leotards (with or without skirts attached) and pink tights. Jazz, Tap, and Modern students can wear leotards with jazz or yoga pants or bike shorts. Hip-hop students can wear tank tops or t-shirts with form-fitting pants or shorts. No jeans. Hair must be up and off the dancers’ faces and necks for all dance classes.

Dance Shoes: Please purchase pink ballet shoes for ballet, and black tap shoes for tap. Tap/Jazz combo classes will wear black tap shoes and black jazz shoes (ages 6 and under). All jazz classes ages 7 and over will wear tan jazz shoes. Modern classes are bare foot. Hip-hop classes can wear jazz shoes or light-soled sneakers (only worn for dance).

Recital Tickets: Admission will be charged for the recital at $12/ticket.   Children 3 and under are free (if they can sit on a lap).  Each family is able to purchase 4 tickets to the show. There is a wait list for additional tickets and requests are almost always fulfilled.

Parent Observation Day is on the last day of classes in December.  The dancers will present a regular class, showcasing the technique they’ve been working on during the fall semester.  All parents are welcome to attend their dancer’s normal class time.
