ABOUT THE SHOW

It’s 1962, change is in the air, and spunky, plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has one big dream – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When she finally gets her shot, she’s transformed from social outcast to sudden star. In balancing her newfound power with her desire for justice, Tracy fights to integrate a TV network. The rhythm of her new beat just might prove unstoppable.

HAIRSPRAY JR. is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters.   The show features a book by Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.  It premiered on Broadway in 2002, eventually running for over 2,500 performances, and won 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.  A film adaptation starring John Travolta, Queen Latifah, and Zac Efron was a box office hit in 2007.  Later this year, NBC will present a live staging on TV starring Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, and Martin Short.

Featuring a rotating cast of 70 children ages 7 to 11 from Riverdale, Upper Manhattan, Yonkers, and beyond, the Riverdale Junior Rising Stars production of HAIRSPRAY JR. is co-directed by Brittany Dorazio, Aine Lafferty, and Carter Ellis.  The design team includes Eric Zoback (Set Design), Jenna Lyons and Jenna Solomon (Scenic painting), Penelope Margeotes (Costume Design), and David Pentz (Lighting Design).  The teenagers of Riverdale Rising Stars previously presented the full-length version of HAIRSPRAY in their 2010-2011 season.
