How To Succeed…Spotlight on Timothy Mathis

Timothy Mathis

What was your first show with the REP?  How many have you been in?

My first was The Mystery of Edwin Drood.  I adored doing that show.  Then I did the concert of Baby followed by The Diary of Anne Frank, so this my fourth.  There you are!

What have you found to be the most challenging with this production?  The most enjoyable?

The most challenging aspect?   For me it is always my ridiculous commute.  Oh, and any choreography.  I don’t dance, don’t ask me.  But I sure can bluff.  The best aspect?  Hanging with people I see regularly, like Marilyn, then reconnecting with folks I don’t see enough, like Geiddy and Elizabeth and Keira, then making lovely new friends like Esther.

What do you do for a living?

Well, last week I was a wedding planner.  Earlier this week I was a manny for two kids in Bronxville.  Last Saturday I was a songwriter in rehearsal for another show.  Next month I am a guest preacher at a Manhattan church.  The first week in December I am the chef and charming host for a massive holiday tea.  And, according to H2$, I do windows.

Why do you participate in Community Theater?

To show off.  That was a joke but it is also patently true.  And I love the community at Riverdale Rep.  The people bring me back.

What’s your favorite part of HOW TO SUCCEED?

Oh, this is a total no-brainer,  “I Believe in You.”  To sing a love song to myself in the mirror of a men’s washroom?  It’s my fantasy.

Where do you live?  Do you participate in theater nearer to your home?

I live in Astoria, Queens.  My commute is 92 minutes on a good day, 2 hours on a bad.  One way.  But I continue to work exclusively with Riverdale Rep because I love the people.  Also, I do not possess the common sense of a billy goat.

  1. Patricia Mack says:

My husband Arthur and I were the couple Timothy was the wedding planner.
He is marvelous to work with for any party planning. Details, Details, Details.
We have also seen his cabaret shows, which are delightful. A man with
many talents and a huge heart who only wants the best for his friends.
Don’t let the “I am all about me” act fool you.

  2. Timothy is just pure joy in so many ways and honored that he actually talks to me. Riverdale Rep is a wonderful community of talented actors who love to perform and give back too. I loved Laurie the first day I met her and so glad to still be a part of the Rep family and the Walton family. I adore them. Break legs!!! I’ll be seeing you on November 8th! Hugs to all.
