How did you hear about RRS and what will be you be teaching at RPAC?
I heard about RRS through a wonderful friend and actress who recommended me to teach their summer program about 2 years ago.
What do you do when not working with RRS?
Lately I’ve been doing a lot of improvised theatre and music. I’ve also been doing a great deal of readings of plays in development.
Did you grow up with a similar program to RRS in your neighborhood?
I did not have a program like this growing up, which is part of the reason I am attached to RRS, I think this is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of the community.
How did you get involved with theater?
Accidentally. I had a friend in college who was directing a play that needed an African-American. I was the only African-American who hung around with the drama department. Note: “I hung around” because I was not studying theatre at all.
Can what you teach in the rehearsal room be applied to outside life?
Absolutely, Theatre and Performance teaches confidence. It also teaches the complexities and nuances of how we communicate with each other as human beings.
What is your biggest challenge as an actor or teacher?
To be able to feel that I am giving something valuable to my students, and to honor and instill in my students the gifts that nature has given me.
What do you look for your students to bring into rehearsal/class?
A sense of fearlessness and imagination.
What do you hope each student of yours gains from your class?
Insight, knowledge of self, and freedom.
Everyone’s favorite – tell us a funny or embarrassing moment involving YOU and theater/acting etc?
I cut myself on stage pretty severely during The Piano Lesson at the Arden, and I literally almost never leave the stage. So I held this towel the entire time and used it as prop. No one noticed.
What was the last show you saw?
The Good Wife…..blah…..
What TV shows are you watching now?
Breaking Bad, and lots of political documentaries.
