Have you worked at Summer Stage before?
Yes I have worked at Summer Stage before; this will be my 3rd year as a counselor! I keep coming back for many reasons. First of all, there is much appeal in that this is a theater camp run by the same people I do theater with/ under through out the year. I’m familiar with the building and the people, so it’s a comfortable environment. I also love the kids who come here year after year, and being able to work with them every summer while also bringing in new faces is such a fun experience.
Did you have a camp like this when you were growing up?
When I was growing up, partly because I moved around NYC a couple times during my elementary school years, I was not aware of the availability of a camp like this. This camp is definitely something special for children interested in theater and performance, and it provides great resources that wouldn’t have thought to be available to me when I was younger.
What is the most exciting part for you about Summer Stage?
For me as a counselor, the most exciting part about Summer Stage is being able to not just interact and form bonds with the campers but also be part of the teaching experience they have. Last year I was put in charge of teaching music to some of the younger kids, and this year the counselors are going to be even more involved in teaching the kids and helping them as more than just counselors. It’s an experience that not many camps provide, and I find that to be very exciting!
What sets Summer Stage apart from other camps?
Summer Stage has such a variety of courses and tracks for campers of all different ages and interests. We have an amazing dance teacher, many experienced acting teachers, and staff that enjoys and loves theater. Within our faculty we have so many experienced people that can provide a special focus on dance, acting, or singing. It’s not a generic theater camp that JUST puts on a show. The campers learn so much more than JUST a show because of the courses and the tracks and the counselors and the teaching artists.
Do you like that all Summer Stage Counselors/Group Leaders are RRS Teens or Alumni and Why?
Like I said, there are many things that set Summer Stage apart from other camps, but I’d say that the fact that the camp is run by alumni and current members of the Riverdale Rising Stars program is the main thing that makes Summer Stage very special, so yes I do like that we are involved. The campers, the counselors, and the staff are nearly all either participants in all levels of the Rising Stars program at the Y or have graduated from the Rising Stars program and have had professional training in the arts. Everyone is qualified and dedicated and loves what they do, making for a fantastic camp experience.
